Buying Guide: best sippy cups

By now you're thinking, it can't be really be THAT hard to find a good sippy cup, can it? Well actually it can and it's almost as daunting as trying to find the right baby bottle that fits your child's needs. Some sippy cups spill, some have straws, some cups require a huge amount of sucking power (good for those that like the bottle), some are better for traveling, and some are insulated. Not to worry, we've tested tons of sippy cups and have found some great ones (and some not so great ones) to share with you that will make life that much easier in making the huge transition from the breast and baby bottle to a "big kid" sippy cup!

Best for transitioning from breast or bottle to "first" sippy cup: Dr. Brown's Soft Spout Training Cup, $5.49, at amazon.com. As a leader in the baby bottle market, it's a natural transition for Dr. Brown's to continue the tradition into the toddler years with a sip-activated valve cup. It doesn't spill when tipped upside down and shaken (which we all know they will do often) and the soft lid helps babies transition to the cup easier. It's also BPA-free, comes with a travel cap and is dishwasher safe!

Best for older toddlers/preschoolers: Munchkin Mighty Grip Flip Straw Cups, $7.99 for a 2-pack, at amazon.com. At some point your child will start to resist drinking from an actual sippy cup and will be ready to transition to a regular cup but you know there will be spills. When you're on the road or trying to keep from making the transition so sudden, these cups are the perfect solution. They are still spill proof but instead of the sippy lid they have a flip-up straw which is perfect for older kids. It's also BPA-free and dishwasher safe.

Best design: Tilty Sippy Cup, $6.99 for set of two, at amazon.com. The idea behind the Tilty Cup's patent pending design is that your toddler won't have to tilt or lean their head back as far to get what's remaining in their cup. It doesn't have handles but it keeps liquid at an angle to make it easier to drink. A great cup for those that have already made the transition to a sippy cup but now need to move onto the next step in "big kid" cups. The clear Tilty cups are dye-free, BPA-free and are dishwasher safe.

Best for travel: Thermos Foogo Stainless Steel Sippy Cup, $15.99, at amazon.com. This is my favorite sippy cup for travel because it's insulated so it stays cold for up six hours and doesn't get any of the condensation like normal sippy cups when you put something cold in them so you can stick it right in your bag. The handles are removable and it's made of BPA-free, kid-friendly stainless steel. As an added bonus, once your child grows out of this cup the parts interchange with the rest of the Foogo stages system so you can keep using it with new lids.

Best bargain: Take & Toss Spill Proof Cups with Removable Handles, $3.70 for a 4-pack, at amazon.com. These cups are perfect for taking on playdates, to the park or for going to restaurants as they are exactly what they say they are -- you can take them and clean them or you can toss them. It's a great cup for just about any child and they also come printed with favorite Disney characters like Mickey Mouse and friends, Princesses, Fairies or Cars.
